Chapter Four

Maya

Over the years, it has become increasingly tough for me to witness Nick with other girls. Since we were both fourteen, I’ve harbored a secret crush on him, marveling at how he has transformed into an incredibly attractive man. His tall stature, broad shoulders, and striking blue eyes have always caught my attention. The way he lights up with a killer smile sets my heart racing and fills me with excitement. Undoubtedly, I have strong feelings for him. However, Nick has never shown any romantic interest in me beyond our close friendship. He has never made a move or given any indication that he desires something more. It feels as though I am permanently situated in the friend zone.

I have had moments where I caught glimpses of him naked, both in the locker room after his basketball games and when he believes he is alone at home, unaware of my presence. I know it may seem wrong, to surreptitiously ogle my naked friend all these years, and worse, to even enjoy it. But who said that I wanted our relationship to be strictly platonic? I never saw Nick as just a friend. From the earliest days of our childhood, I have always felt that our connection was something far beyond ordinary friendship.

Two weeks ago, Nick surprised me with unexpected news, mentioning his plans to propose to Maggie. Going the extra mile, he even involved me by sending a range of engagement rings and asking for my assistance in selecting one for Maggie. Call it mischief, but I couldn’t resist the urge to choose a ring that appealed to my personal taste, knowing well that it deviated from what Maggie would prefer. And I spent the entire day trying to talk some sense into him, pleading with him to hold off on the proposal. But he shut me down, claiming he’s made up his mind already.

As a lawyer, I knew I needed a solid plan, a game-changer, to avoid losing Nick forever without him truly understanding the depth of my love. Despite his lack of romantic gestures, I could sense something in his eyes, something unspoken, that suggested he might have feelings too, but maybe he was held back by the workplace’s strict no-dating policy.

So, the first step of my plan was to find a new job. I knew how much Nick valued his work and how hard he worked for that promotion. It was up to me to break free from the company’s policy, so I actively pursued job interviews and now I’m eagerly waiting for the outcome. That’s why I asked Nick to hold off on the proposal for a week. I’m confident that one of the jobs I applied for will be mine. Once I secure a new position, I can finally express my feelings to Nick without worrying about the company’s rules. There will be no more excuses for him to shy away from his own feelings. If, by chance, he doesn’t feel the same way, it will be crystal clear.
